Alison Puruntatameri

Alison Puruntatameri is an artist of the Pirlangimpi Community on Melville Island, the larger of the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory. She began painting on the advice of her grandfather, the late Justin Puruntatameri, a respected elder who would take the family hunting when Alison was a child. Her works incorporate Jilamara designs, which have a deep familial significance that has been carried on for many generations. Her work Yirrikipayi (‘crocodile’ in Tiwi) and the associated song and dance (or dreaming) have been handed down from their fathers. This design reflects the Yirrikipayi skin.
