Elizabeth Newman

With this painting I set about deliberately painting (about) nothing. My aim was to paint without any subject matter or conscious intention, just to see what one would paint as painting. This is a conscious strategy: to take something seemingly conventional and unexceptional (oil paint on linen) to see if it might not add something different to the current discourse of homogenous spectacle. In the era of chat and
blah blah, I propose a kind of silence or non-speech.
