Sarah Goffman

My work Takara (2016) (‘treasure’ in Japanese) consists of sixty pieces on a light box, lluminated from below. It merges many decorative styles and elements from treasures of the
Silk Road using found plastic PET bottles and containers from the shores and streets of Sydney alongside collections from my travels in Europe and Asia I embellish the designs of consumer items meant for disposal. These works sit in connection with many previous art works, where the process of mediating beauty through the re-use of common objects is explored. The art of conversion, transformation and alchemy is enacted by reclaiming contemporary detritus, highlighting its exchange value and issues of waste in a throwaway society.
