I am a painter. In my work I use and go beyond the visible and known world, through form, line and the psychic effect of colour. My work addresses the materials, conventions, styles and histories of painting, attempting to extend the traditions that it emerges from. I create paintings as they allow for the
continuation of notions of freedom; something that is significant in both art and life.
My practice is a fluid and continuous experimentation. Whilst undertaking an exchange at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna in anticipation of my lover’s arrival in 35 days, I commenced a series of daily collages, each 15x15cm. The Weight (2015) is one of these transitioned into a large-scale oil painting.
While the collages formed intuitively and quickly through actions of cutting, pasting and drawing to build a composition, the transition of collage to canvas becomes a considered and enduring process. As with photographic realism, the playfulness of the initial collage is documented precisely, thereby providing a
visual riddle as to the origin of seeming incongruous images.
